This Thursday...

We're having a Christmas Card Workshop this Thursday! Heather Holdsworth will share tips and insight from her years in design. If you're craft-challenged (like me) I'm sure you'll appreciate Heather's advice. Hope to see you there.

We'll also discuss the chapter - Enrich Your Relationships - from The Fresh Brewed Life.

Pack-n-Play

We are traveling to my sister's for the Thanksgiving holidays. I was wondering if anyone might have a pack and play that I could borrow for 4 month old Reuben. He could sleep on the floor but I thought I would ask around first. We live in Jenkins Hall and I plan to be at Student Wives on Thursday or we can pick up it up.

Thanks.

The Easleys are moving...

In anticipation of our move we have some items we would like to give away:

- A big screen tv…(50”) Silver, sits on its own pedestal…great for the Superbowl!
- White dresser w/ mirror (like for a girl)
- Lawn mower, in good condition, self-propelled

If you are interested email me at cindyeasley@comcast.net and I’ll send you a picture if you desire. The only catch is that you must come move these items yourself, on or before December 15th.

I miss seeing you all!

-- Cindy

Checks...

For those of you who were in SWF last year, I have somewhat of a strange request again this Christmas! My brother is mentally disabled young man who loves nothing more than checkbooks--that's right, checkbooks! He's been "writing checks" for about 15 years now and everyone in our home church and town has given him checks from closed checking accounts, name changes, etc. There is nothing that makes him happier than writing pretend checks to people.

Now, this is where you guys come in. I was wondering if anyone had checks that you no longer need due to changing accounts, changing your name, moving, etc. To put your mind at ease, even if the account isn't closed, we mark out the account number at the bottom of the check so that there is no question that it isn't an active check/account. In the fifteen years we've been doing this, we've never had an issue with the checks getting in the wrong hands or anything like that. He just writes them to family and friends for fun.

So, if anyone has any old checks that you no longer need, I would really appreciate your donation to helping to make my brother's Christmas great!

Any questions, please email abigailjellel@gmail.com.

Thank you so much for your consideration!
Abigail

Updates on Daniela's Mom

October 31

Hi everybody,

Thanks for all who have prayed for my mom. She got the official o.k. from her doctors to come to Chicago for the period of Nov. 5th to 30th and she is really excited!!!

Her iron level was still not good this week so that she had to get an additional blood infusion but the doctors hope that she will be fine while being here.

Both my parents will be arriving this coming Wednesday and my dad will move on to go to an international board meeting on the 11th.

Thanks again for your prayers,
Daniela

October 30

Hi all,

Here is a little update for those who have been praying for my mom.

We are very thankful that her gynecologist really pushes things that she can come to visit us (that would be next Wednesday already).

Right now the situation is as follows:
The metastases in her intestins are still borderline, but will definately get malign. That's why the doctors are planning another chemotherapy for December once she is back home. The good thing is that this chemo would not cause any loss of hair.
However my mom would have to decide before she comes over next week whether she would want to do that. As she has had so many chemotherapies already she doesn't know whether it is "worth" to go through all the pain again.

You can still pray for her iron level which is really low. She has to do another test this week and in case it turns out bad she would have to get an infusion of 34 oz. of blood.
It is not yet clear to the doctors where exactly she is loosing the blood.

She really hopes being able to come and in addition not having to see any doctors during her visit over here.

Thanks for your prayers,
Daniela

Things to Share...

- Pam MacRae, Assistant Professor of Pastoral Studies, will speaking at this Thursday's meeting.

- Please bring $5 for your copy of The Fresh-Brewed Life if you have not done so already.

- I've always appreciated Lisa's candidness in admitting that studying at Moody isn't easy, especially if you're married - that's why Student Wives exists. Several requests for prayer over the last two weeks show the truth of Lisa's statement. Life at Moody can be hard and very difficult, especially when you've moved away from friends and family who would normally support you. Thankfully, we're all in this season of life together. We know that Christ shares in our sufferings, but he also graciously provides others who can come alongside us in our journey and help us through our struggles. So, Student Wives has a separate blog dedicated to prayer. It was created because the requests which are most important shouldn't be lost in the shuffle of announcements and updates on the regular blog. If you would like other wives to pray for the needs of you, your husband, or family please email moodyswf@gmail.com or a member of the leadership team.

Baby Talitha is here...

For those who were here last year, Danica Allen, had her baby a couple of weeks ago and wanted to share the following message and pictures with the group.

Hello friends!

Praise the Lord with us for the wonderful gift He has given us in little Talitha Eileen. Talitha is Aramaic for 'precious little girl' (see Mark 5:41), and Eileen is the name of her great grandmother. Here are some specs for all who are interested:

Born September 21, 2008 at 10:57 pm measuring 21.5 inches, she weighed in at 7 lbs. 10 oz. Danica and Tali were able to arrive home on Tuesday and are both doing well.

We are enjoying our new place in West Allis, WI and Dan is getting settled in his job at the Milwaukee Rescue Mission. We would appreciate prayers as we care for Tali and strive to point her to Christ Jesus. Thanks for all your support through the years.

Our new contact info is:

Love,
Dan and Danica (and Tali too!)

Cinnabons...

I had a number of ladies asking me for a recipe for Cinnabons I made last weekend (the ones that my husband and I couldn't stop eating) so I thought I would share...unfortunately, you need a bread machine - but if any of you ladies live in Jenkins and want to borrow our bread machine, you are more than welcome!! It's my new best friend!! (We live in Jenkins 12J - (262)327-0491).

INGREDIENTS:
1 cup warm milk (110 degrees F/45 degrees C)
2 eggs, room temperature
1/3 cup margarine, melted
4 1/2 cups bread flour
1 teaspoon salt
1/2 cup white sugar
2 1/2 teaspoons bread machine yeast
1 cup brown sugar, packed
2 1/2 tablespoons ground cinnamon
1/3 cup butter, softened
1 (3 ounce) package cream cheese, softened
1/4 cup butter, softened
1 1/2 cups confectioners' sugar
1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
1/8 teaspoon salt

DIRECTIONS:
Place ingredients in the pan of the bread machine in the order recommended by the manufacturer. Select dough cycle; press Start. After the dough has doubled in size turn it out onto a lightly floured surface, cover and let rest for 10 minutes.

In a small bowl, combine brown sugar and cinnamon. Roll dough into a 16x21 inch rectangle. Spread dough with 1/3 cup butter and sprinkle evenly with sugar/cinnamon mixture. Roll up dough and cut into 12 rolls. Place rolls in a lightly greased 9x13 inch baking pan. Cover and let rise until nearly doubled, about 30 minutes. Meanwhile, preheat oven to 400 degrees F (200 degrees C). Bake rolls in preheated oven until golden brown, about 15 minutes.

While rolls are baking, beat together cream cheese, 1/4 cup butter, confectioners' sugar, vanilla extract and salt. Spread frosting on warm rolls before serving.

Also, there's a GREAT website for recipes that taste just like some of the dishes at restaurants. I found my husband's favorite dish from the Cracker Barrel on here, and it tastes JUST LIKE it! Check it out for some fun cooking experiments! http://www.copykat.com/ Happy cooking!!

Ministry Wives Re-Cap...

Below are a few pieces of advice from the ministry wives at last Thursday's meeting, along with the poem from Ruth Graham Bell.

Pray for those who present challenges to your ministry

Be responsible for your own spiritual growth. Don’t leave it up to your husband

Be real in ministry. It allows others to connect with you.

Allow your husband to “come home” to a place where he doesn’t have to be a “pastor.”

Learn to say, “no.”

Be yourself, not what others expect of you.

Don’t try to step into the shoes of the previous pastor’s wife.

Whether you’re working in or outside the home, you won’t have as much time with the congregation as your husband, so seek out opportunities to get to know them.

Learn to minister as a family, especially with your children.

A reminder for you and your children: God hasn’t just called “dad” to this place of ministry. He’s called all of us and has a special place for each of us while we’re here.

Be your husband’s biggest fan. No one else will see and know all the hard work he does.

Love without clinging:
cry
if you must –
but privately cry:
the heart will adjust
to the newness of loving
in practical ways:
cleaning
and cooking
and sorting out clothes,
all say, “I love you,”
when lovingly done.

So –
love
without clinging
cry –
if you must –
but privately cry:
the heart will adjust
to the length of his stride,
the song he is singing,
the trail he must ride,
the tensions that make him
the man that he is,
the world he must face,
the life that is his.

So
love without clinging:
cry –
if you must –
but privately cry:
the heart will adjust
to being the heart,
not the forefront of life:
a part of himself,
not the object _
his wife.

So –
love!

Update from Lisa...

Hello Friends,

There is no other place to start then to lift our hearts of praise and adoration up to the Lord! How faithful He has been. He continues to walk with us through this journey and what a comfort and strength He is!

James had his follow-up visit in Indy this week, with Plastic Surgery, Neuro Surgery and Opthamology. They were all very pleased with the progress he is making. He is healing well and we are so thankful to see him regaining his strength and stamina. He still has some swelling, tenderness and numbness which is to be expected; and there is still vision healing due to the optic nerve injury. There is also some fluid (from the head injury) that has affected his hearing a bit, so we'll be seeing a doctor this week to take care of that asap, we hope!

We were glad to hear that we can start moving into more activity. James was especially happy, however, we were heavily cautioned on the seriousness of the situation should he get re-injured. We understand completely and don't take it lightly! Needless to say, we are proceeding with caution, common sense and wisdom! We've been told from the beginning that this is a 'marathon' healing process, not a 'sprint'...and how true that is!

It's very clear that James is a walking miracle! We are continuing to trust God for His healing in His perfect time. There is a season for everything, and we realize that this is our season of healing.

Thank you to all of you for your continued love, prayer and concern for us. Our hearts cannot contain the joy and gratefulness we feel for you! Your love has refreshed our hearts! (We'll continue to keep you posted!)

"The Most High God has done miracles and wonderful things for me that I am happy to tell you about. His wonderful acts are great, and his miracles are mighty. His kingdom goes on forever, and his rule continues from now on." Daniel 4: 2-3

Wrapped in His love,
Jim, Lisa, James & Vincent Menditto

Announcements...

This Week at SWF - Looking toward the exciting yet daunting role of being in ministry? This week we'll hear from women currently in ministry to glean some wisdom from. Bring any questions you have for them!

The Fresh Brewed Life - Please bring $5 to purchase your copy.

Babysitter needed - Maggie Drummond, a former Student Wife, is looking for a babysitter two days per week. Maggie is returning to work and needs care for her four-month-old baby girl. Days are either Tuesdays or Thursdays according to your availability, and Fridays. The hours would vary, but generally 7am-4pm. Contact her at 260.417.1848

An apple a day - Several wives have expressed the need of finding a good personal/family doctor in the city. If you have a recommendation, please make a comment to this post or email moodyswf@gmail.com. (Below is our first recommendation.)

Hello! I have had an incredible experience with the "Women's Practice." They are located at:

737 N. Michigan Ave.
Suite 950
Chicago, IL 60611
Phone Number: (312) 751-7515

My doctor is Mia Norlin. Over the course of my pregnancy I met with all the doctors, (except one), and liked each of them. They occasionally schedule you to have an appointment with a nurse, opposed to the doctors, but the nurses are wonderful also. Having Dr. Norlin take care of me during my pregnancy and delivery was wonderful and I can’t say enough good about the experience. The office is located above Neiman Marcus at the corner of Chicago and Michigan Ave....so it’s really close and convenient, especially if you are pregnant and visit often! Just a warning, the parking is $12.00, so walking or taking the Chicago 66 bus is a smart idea if you want to save some money!

Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions!

-Lindsay Roseberry

Kitchen Needs - Janet Ellis from Moody Catering has offered to lend her extra cooking/baking supplies to Student Wives. If you need to borrow an item such as a stock pot, lasagna dish, pie dish, etc. you may email her at janet.ellis@moody.edu

Apartment Available - A note from Hannah Stuart-Walker:

We just moved to a new apartment, and our old apartment (in the Franson Risberg Mission Memorial Home) is now available – pretty much immediately! Our move came up very suddenly because we received an offer that we could not refuse, but that meant in order to get our security deposit back, there would need to be renters available to move into the apartment within the next couple of weeks. So, I wanted to get the word out to all the wives, because it has been such a blessing living in the Franson Risberg (community-wise and financially!) and would love to see this blessing passed on, and we also would really love to get that security deposit back! :)

Here is more specific info on the apartment: The building is located at the corner of Mclean and Mozart – within the Logan Square area. The apartment is a one-bedroom on the third floor. The building is well-kept. The building managers are closely connected with Moody (the husband works for Moody and the wife is attending the Moody grad school) and we have never had a problem with getting things repaired in a timely fashion.

Here is the big ticket – the price: only $460 a month!! The building is owned by a board of Christian businessmen, and originally was purchased with the intent that it would be turned into affordable housing for individuals who fit one of the following criteria: 1) Were active in full-time ministry. 2) Were training for ministry. So, that is the reason why the rent is so incredibly affordable! Utilities are included (with the exception of a land-line for a phone) and laundry is available in the basement of the building for a cost of $7 a month per person. There is a courtyard owned by the building. We truly loved living in this building (have lived there for about 3 ½ years!) and were hesitant to leave, but we were blessed with a huge open door and felt the Lord’s leading that it was time move on.

Please email me or give me a call if you have any questions – hannah.stuart-walker@moody.edu, 773.727.3329

In His hand,
Hannah

1st Post of Fall

It's officially fall this week! Although our 80-degree temperatures certainly aren't indicating it. However, I'm glad we get to savor a few more days of summer, but I also look forward to the leaves changing colors and the chilly (but not freezing) sweater weather. All that to say, "Happy Fall!"

Student Wives Directory - If you did not have your picture made last week for the directory, please stop by on Thursday. Pictures will be taken before and after dinner, as well as at the end of the meeting.

Babysitting Job from Daniela Marx- A good friend of mine from church is moving really close to Moody and is interested in sitters:

Childcare needed: Looking for childcare for our 18-month old son on an
as needed basis. We are new to the downtown area and would like to
line up childcare workers. We are located at 77 W. Huron. Pay rate
$8-10/ hour. If interested or would like more details, please email
Suzanne at suzannecamping@hotmail.com

Date Night Possibility - The following opportunity is available to Moody students and staff:

SPECIAL OFFER TO SEE THE SCREWTAPE LETTERS
Moody STAFF: Buy 1 Get One Free: 10/2 and 10/3 (Reg. $48.50)
Moody STUDENTS: $20 each (for all shows from 10/2 – 10/5)

When first published in 1942, The Screwtape Letters brought immediate fame to a little known Oxford don whose field of study was medieval English literature. Over the past sixty years its wit and wisdom have made it one of C. S. Lewis' most widely read and influential works.

Fellowship for the Performing Arts has adapted and produced this best selling classic into a thoroughly engaging and entertaining theatrical production. After playing to sold out houses in New York City’s Theatre at St. Clement’s and in Washington D. C. at The Shakespeare Theatre Company’s Lansburgh Theatre, The Screwtape Letters will begin a limited engagement on Oct. 2 at the historic Mercury Theater in Chicago. For more information go to www.ScrewtapeOnStage.com

Profiles - You've heard a bit from Kelly and Heather this semester, but I asked if they would consider sharing how they came to Moody. I hope you'll be encouraged by these two amazing women and their stories, which are posted below.

Introducing...

Kelly Lillpop
President
Junior - Elementary Education

I am very excited in be a part of the leadership for Student Wives this year. From the time I first attended a Student Wives meeting, married two weeks, in a new place, and jobless, it has been a source of friendship and encouragement. Before Moody I moved from Colorado to attend North Park University, just north of the city. Shortly after, my then-boyfriend Chris decided to move to Chicago as well (quite the coincidence...) to start classes at Moody. After a while of studying theater at North Park I realized that although drama is one of my passions, I followed that passion selfishly. I felt the Lord calling me to serve Him instead of myself, and made the decision to transfer to Moody. Now I enjoy being in a community of believers studying God’s word in order to serve him with their lives. Though I still have a love for theater, I am currently studying elementary education and can’t wait to be a teacher! In addition to being a full-time student, I am also a Mad Scientist. A few days per week I teach after-school science classes at area elementary schools. It is a blast!

My husband is studying International Ministries, and we are both on course to graduate spring of 2010. At this point we aren’t sure what God has for us after Moody, but for now we will “dwell in the land and cultivate faithfulness” Psalm 37:2.

I look forward to hearing the stories of each of you who are new to Student Wives, as well as reconnecting with the returning wives. We are on this journey together, so please don’t hesitate to contact me with any questions, concerns, or needs.

Heather Holdsworth
Vice-President
Graduate School, Spiritual Formation and Discipleship

Our story goes back a bit ... If you peek into the Moody museum, you can see a huge roll of signatures from Scots pleading for D L Moody to come to tell them the good news about Jesus. He came. He raised money for a church to be built on the Royal Mile - half way between the castle and the palace. A few years went by! In that church Adrian and I met. We got involved in lots of ministries. We grew, were challenged, learned to love God - and a little while later - found and loved each other! We married in 1997. Adrian was studying laser physics at one of the universities there. I was teaching in a school in the projects. We lived in Edinburgh and then Cambridge, England, working in the churches the Lord brought us to. In 2003 we were strongly encouraged to pursue Christian ministry full-time. And that's where this journey started.

We studied in a fabulous little Bible School in Edinburgh called The Faith Mission. We found people whose hearts were on fire for God and whose lives were hallmarked by devotion to the Saviour. It was life transforming. There followed a year as missionaries in middle England. Nope, doesn't sound too glamorous or romantic on the missionary stakes - but 92% of people in England have nothing to do with Jesus of Nazareth. God blessed and rescued people. We're looking forward to seeing them in Heaven.

So the journey continues! The Lord clearly called us to Moody Grad School where we started in August 2007. Adrian is working on a master of divinity degree and I'm studying spiritual formation and discipleship.

Where next? We don't know! But we have a great big God who leads us. He's amazing - stunning - captivating. We are blessed.

(Isaiah 40; Psalm 121 - totally great!)

Wedding Photos - More than Pictures

One of my favorite events at the beginning of Student Wives is sharing wedding photos. It seems so simple and disconnected, they're just photos, right? But, in essence we're sharing the starting point of a life-long journey. We're in this community, connected because of this one day that represents a partnership and the commitment to figuring out all of its idiosyncrasies.

I also love learning more about each wife and their background, where they are from, their families and personal style. So, all this to say, don't forget your wedding photos on Thursday!

(I thought I would start by sharing one of my own. Needless to say, Andy and I aren't dancers. But, we did laugh a lot.)

Also, if you have a website or store info that would be useful to other wives, please email it moodyswf@gmail.com

Apartment for Rent

Anyone in need of a 2-bedroom apartment?

Because of an internship with our church we will be able to move to an apartment the church owns in November. We have lived on 1735 W. Winona St. for 1 1/2 years now and really liked it. It is especially family friendly. There are a lot of shops close by and it is only 2 blocks from the Clark bus to go to Moody, 1/2 hour walk to the beach and Target, Aldi, Jewel and a lot of parks close by.

Our landlord would love to have another Christian couple/family live here. We live on the first floor and paid $900 rent and had a front and back porch including yard for those of you who have kids.

If you are interested to take a look give us a call: 773-944-5534

Leadership Team

Worship - Heather Holdsworth and Andrea Zumhagen will be leading us in worship several times throughout the year. If you have a musical talent you would like to share with the other wives email Andrea (azum2b@gmail.com) or Heather (heather.a.holdsworth@moody.edu)

Activities – They’re the life of the party, literally. Tonya McKeirnan (tonyamckeirnan@yahoo.com) and Leeanne Kuffel (leeannekuffel@hotmail.com) plan several events throughout the semester that provide wives with an opportunity to get to know one another better. Events include the Valentine’s Banquet, Ice Cream Social, and Christmas dinner.

Hospitality - If you have met Jenny Jones, you know she has a heart for helping others. Last year she shared her culinary skills (she's a student at culinary school in downtown Chicago) to teach us a bit more about cooking. This year she will be leading the hospitality team for Student Wives.

Student Wives Boutique – As Kelly mentioned at the Ice Cream Social, the Student Wives Boutique is a place where wives can come to pick up home goods, clothes (men’s, women’s & children’s), books and more. It’s located on the second floor of the Alumni Student Center and we will provide more information shortly about the hours. If you have other questions, email Cassidy Smith dssmith2@liberty.edu or Michelle Foster (michellelfoster@gmail.com)

Secretary – Each week there is much planning in advance to make things run smoothly. Our secretary is one of those people that make it happen. If you have questions about the organization or logistics of a meeting, email Erin Schledewitz (archibald_blue@hotmail.com)
Encouragement – The weeks of a semester can seem to drag on forever and who doesn’t need a little encouragement along the way? Our “encouragers” at Student Wives are here to help you. Whether it be with a baby meal, a kind word or someone to pray for you they are ready to serve. Send requests and concerns to Karen Vincoy (karenmvincoy@yahoo.com)

Leadership – We’re very excited about a new year at Student Wives. Our leaders, Kelly Lillpop and Heather Holdsworth have planned an excellent semester that we hope will refresh and encourage you in your walk with Christ.

Lisa Menditto – If you haven’t had the privilege of meeting Lisa, you’re missing out. She has been involved with Student Wives for many years and continues to ensure that the needs of the married students at Moody are taken care of each year. She’s also a great person to laugh with and always ready to lend a listening ear.

Finding a job...

One of the benefits of Student Wives is the opportunity to encourage other couples and families by meeting their practical needs. Every semester it seems that one of the greatest practical challenges facing couples at Moody is finding jobs that help pay the bills, but allow time for school and ministry commitments. Within Student Wives, we try to share different job opportunities and information that may help another couple. Sara was kind enough to start us out for the new semester (see below). If you have another job post you would like to share with other wives, please email moodyswf@gmail.com

I know a woman who is looking for a part time nanny. She has one son who is 21 months old. The hours would be Tuesdays from 8-3 (preferably longer) and Thursdays from 11-5, with the possibility of evening or weekend work if you're interested. They live about a mile north of campus. If you are interested, please send me your contact information and I will pass it along.

Thank you,

Ice Cream...What's Not To Love?

Orientation...

Orientation was fantastic! It was great to see both new and old friends of Student Wives (including a few husbands who dropped by to hang out with our volunteers). I've included a couple of pictures in case you missed the event.

Lisa Menditto, Heather Holdsworth, and Kelly Lillpop manned (womaned?) the table at orientation. It was fun, but we may have eaten way too much chex mix....

If you're new to Moody, as an fyi, Lisa is the Student Wives Coordinator. If you have prayer requests or need some help getting settled in Chicago, feel free to email Lisa - lisa.menditto@moody.edu

Again, we really enjoyed meeting you all and hope you will be able to join us at Student Wives this year. As always, if you have questions, please email moodyswf@gmail.com

FAQs...

If you are new to Moody you may ask yourself: “What is Student Wives?” “Why should I come?” “Does it cost anything?” “Will other women my age or in my stage of life be there?”

The answers to those questions, and more, can be found in the FAQs below. If you have further questions, please feel free to email moodyswf@gmail.com

What is Student Wives?
Student Wives is a free ministry to the married women of Moody Bible Institute. Whether you or your husband is the student, we invite you to attend.

When and where is Student Wives?
Student Wives is held Thursdays, from 6 to 9 p.m in the Kimball Room at MBI.

Who attends Student Wives?
A variety of women at all stages of life attend Student Wives – Some are supporting their husbands through school by working full-time. Others are raising children at home. Many are full and part-time students who either attend MBI with or without their husbands.

I hear there is a free dinner. Is this true?
Yes! Moody values the ministry of Student Wives and provides a free dinner every Thursday. Wives can also bring the leftovers home to their husbands - no cooking and no cleaning involved.

Is childcare available?
Free childcare during our Thursday meetings is available. However, a meal is not provided, so kids should have dinner before coming.

What if I can’t come every week?
Then come on the weeks you can! We understand that your many roles in life – mother, wife, student, ministry worker, etc. – can be demanding. We will miss you when you’re not there, but understand.

I have to come straight from work/school/ministry and will be late. Is that ok?
Definitely. Student Wives follows a similar format each week and always begins with dinner. So, if you’re a few (or even 30) minutes late you’ll mostly likely miss just a bit of the dinner time.

A goodbye...

I’m always thankful for a new season of life and exciting adventures on the horizon. We have lots to look forward to as Dan graduates then we start packing to move out of Jenkins Hall in July and we welcome our first child into the world just a few months after that. As exciting as these times of change may be, they also make me rather nostalgic and there is this sort of homesickness feeling that comes over me.

I remember when I was graduating from middle school. Those last few days of my eighth grade year were filled with good-byes, hugs, yearbook signings and tears. Rather pathetic, I guess, to cry about leaving the 8th grade when I think of how much more there is to life beyond middle school. However, no matter how pathetic and naive, I did have one thing right – I knew that as of the last day I walked out of that middle school building, life would never be the same - everything would change.

I guess that’s where the nostalgic and homesick feeling sort of comes in. Things are always changing and change can be hard. Change means saying good-bye, leaving things we love and are comfortable with. It means entering into the unknown, taking risks and adjusting.

Aren’t you thankful that we serve a God who does not change?

While we say farewell to the Moody Bible Institute, professors, friends, for some Jenkins Hall, for some the city of Chicago, for some the United States… it is good to know that our unchanging God is present wherever we are. His years have no end, He remains faithful and His Word stands forever. If you are undergoing a time of change I pray that our steadfast, consistent and faithful God will be your stronghold and rock in the days and months to come.

I’ve been blessed by many of you in this season of my life. Thanks for a great year in SWF.

Love, Danica

Dealing with the destructive...

They are difficult and destructive - a person in your small group, a high-school friend or a family member. You cringe as their name appears on the screen of your cell phone. You have tried to help them grow in their faith, but every time you make an attempt it ends up consuming more of your own energies as they strain your emotional health, time, and capacity for love.

So, the battleground is set. The last time you talked unfortunate words were said, feelings were hurt and now the relationship is limping along and with its current pace will be crippled at best. How do you move forward?

I have faced a couple of these “relationships” in the last few months. I struggle every time I meet with them. I do not know what to say or do and the hardest part is that these people claim to know Christ. Yet, their actions are causing quite a wake in the lives of those they interact with.

Until recently, I thought that their problems were their own, however, over the past few weeks God has gently nudged me with the words of Matthew 18: If your brother sins against you, go and tell him his fault, between you and him alone….I counter with my pseudo-exegetical thought… “Well, what did Christ really mean here? Within the historical, philosophical context he meant…”

No. It means if you brother sins against you, go and tell him his fault. (Funny how God isn’t humored by my arguments.)

So, I prepare to go, but how? What should I say? Will I be nervous? I always seem to say the wrong thing. As I began to run through this list of insecurities God has remained faithful over the last two weeks and supplied the right information to prepare and equip me.

I have talked with other women who are having the same experiences. We’ve discussed and shared thoughts. And, He’s put the right materials and scripture in place for me to think on. Two of the resources I would like to share with you (I will also add them to the education section on left):

http://www.leslievernick.com/pdfs/How%20to%20Interact%20with%20a%20Destructive%20Person.pdf

http://www.dts.edu/media/play/?MediaItemID=ece4b8e2-00d1-4c3c-9810-fb3d250ddba6&audio=true

I thought both of these would be helpful for us as wives preparing for ministry because as I am sure our mentors can testify to, there is no lack of emotionally struggling people with unhealthy habits to care for in the ministry. However, as with any challenge, we must remember to go in love because our lives often have emotionally rough spots too. And with that thought, I’ll close with a quote from one of the articles:

Remember, one of the surest signs of your own emotional and spiritual growth and maturity is that you no longer retaliate when someone hurts you or does wrong to you. One of the most natural things we feel when someone hurts us is to want vengeance or respond to evil with more evil of our own. But Jesus specifically commands us to respond radically differently than our natural selves would. He calls us to love our enemies and do them good, not harm.

Ballet Magnificat

Ballet Magnificat - performing "The Hiding Place"
April 19 - 7:00pm
Solheim Center Gymnasium
www.balletmagnificat.com

"Omega Company intrigues audiences with spiritually compelling performances...the company brings spiritual concepts to life through the powerful medium of dance. The Ballet Magnificat Omega Company taps into the struggle of two sisters, Corrie and Betsie Ten Boom, as they search for possibilities to help their life-long Jewish neighbors and friends obtain security."

I attended one of their performances, and it far exceeded any ideas or expectations I had. I was very moved, and it was truly a worshipful experience! Surprisingly enough, my husband liked it as much as I! This is a very unique opportunity and to be able to attend at such a low cost is definitely something to be taken advantage of...it would be a fun "date night" as well! :-)

Thanks so much - let me know if you have any other questions!
your sister in Christ,

Introducing Miriam Serene Smith...

Psalm 34:3, "Glorify The Lord with me; let us exalt His name together." Praise the Lord!!!! Miriam Serene Smith was born March 11 at 9:33 p.m weighing in at 6 lbs, 14oz. This story is HIS story once again orchestrated by our Loving Father. Once again the prayers of many people praying for us have been answered with a "yes, I will take care of it."

The baby was born on day 2 of Kareem's spring break! The Lord provided us with a babysitter for that day and the delivery went amazingly well. I was at a relaxed hospital and had the time I needed to really focus on what the Lord was doing in the midst of it all.

Kareem and I had a time of worship before Miriam's arrival. We worshiped as we listened to Israel Houghton's song, "Break Through" over and over.

The Dr. and staff were really helpful. No tears, no rips, cuts or trauma post-partum, etc... I am so overjoyed to be home 2 days later. Isaac absolutely loves his new baby sister. Dominick is just not sure what to think of her. We couldn't have planned it better.

We will send pictures soon so look out. Until then...

Love,
Renelle Smith

Have you ever wondered...

Have you ever wondered what type of meal to prepare for a friend in need? What's appropriate? Maybe you received a kind gift, but not sure how to say "thank you." Or, maybe you've been invited to a party, but don't know if a hostess gift is appropriate.

The fact is, at one time or another, most of us struggle with our "social graces." We're not sure what to say when, which fork you use first, or the format for writing a "thank you" note.

Because of those insecurities, etiquette is usually a topic we avoid, but in fact, it is just another way to show that we respect and honor others. On Thursday April 10, SWF has the opportunity to host Emily Ferguson, our etiquette expert, and Chris Jensen, a registered dietitian.

Emily will concentrate on her expertise, while Chris will share about healthy eating habits for women. Each guest will field questions from the group. However, if you have a specific diet question that plagues you everytime you walk down the grocery store aisle, or if you're dying to know how to write the perfect "thank you" note, email Danica with your questions ahead of time at danica.allen@moody.edu.

Don't delay! All questions must be received by March 21.

We miss you too Abigail!

Thank you girls for praying for my five weeks in Ohio! Things are going well at work and with my family. It's been really nice to get to spend time with both family and friends in OH. I've really missed Josh over the last three weeks, but he joins me this coming Saturday in OH for the last week that I'm in training. We'll then head to Virginia to stay with my best friend from high school/college, followed by some backpacking/sight-seeing in Gatlinburg, TN. Then we'll come back to Chicago! I can't wait to be back in my own home! We'll be back in Chicago on Easter Sunday. I'm really looking forward to seeing you all at SWF at the end of March!

Our prayers are with you Teresa...

Thanks to everyone for your prayers for my family. There is sad news. Over the weekend, my Aunt and Uncle were told that Matt had only 1% chance of not being a vegetable for life and so they proceeded to work through the details of donating organs and removing life support. Matt died peacefully at 5:00 p.m. on Sunday.

This of course is devastating for his parents, but they seem to have the best possible perspective on it. My uncle said that ‘God has a plan for it all and who knows, Matt’s eyes may be the eyes of the next president.’ It was interesting for me to hear those words from a man who, as far as I have been able to observe, does not have a relationship with Christ. Please pray that this whole event will move them from the point of mental assent of who Christ is (or a stagnant Christianity which ever may be the case) into a fruitful relationship with the Lord. Please pray also for life change for my alcoholic father who habitually drinks while operating a vehicle. (Matt’s mom is his sister.

I think the funeral will be sometime this week, so please pray for that too and all who attend and for me to restrain my desire to try to explain why this happened since I really don’t know and my speculations would probably do more harm than good!

Thanks again to you all for your prayers during this tragic event.

Teresa

Car seat anyone...

My brother and sister in law and their baby are visiting over spring break. They will be flying in to Chicago, so we were hoping to find a car seat we could borrow for the time they are here. If anyone has a car seat for a baby under a year old available for us to use from the 19th-25th, we would greatly appreciate it! Call us as 312.502.7361. Thank you!

An update from Teresa...

I just spoke with one of my aunts. Matt is still in critical condition. He has a broken hip, his diaphragm was torn, one lung collapsed, and has MASSIVE brain trauma and swelling. I guess that they have finished operating on the brain. He’s currently not waking up from the anesthesia. They are taking another x-ray of the brain. She said that while it’s not a good sign that he’s not waking up from the anesthesia, she sounded a little optimistic about them taking another x-ray. Maybe there’s a chance he will live.

He had been at a friend’s house at a party. He called home and told my aunt he was going to just stay the night there since he had been drinking but then for some reason he decided to drive home around 3 a.m. He hit a pole about one mile from home, the police didn’t come for half an hour and then it took them half an hour to get him out of the car.

Please continue to pray for a miracle and that his life would be preserved and that as a result he would surrender to the Lord!

Introducing Lydia Grace...

11 From Troas we put out to sea and sailed straight for Samothrace, and the next day on to Neapolis. 12From there we traveled to Philippi, a Roman colony and the leading city of that district of Macedonia. And we stayed there several days.

13 On the Sabbath we went outside the city gate to the river, where we expected to find a place of prayer. We sat down and began to speak to the women who had gathered there. 14 One of those listening was a woman named Lydia, a dealer in purple cloth from the city of Thyatira, who was a worshiper of God.

The Lord opened her heart to respond to Paul's message. 15 When she and the members of her household were baptized, she invited us to her home. "If you consider me a believer in the Lord," she said, "come and stay at my house." And she persuaded us. Acts 16:11 -15.

Lydia Grace Anderson was born Feb. 22, 2008 at 3:33 pm and she was 7 lb. 1 oz. and 19 1/2 inches. She is doing really great and we are all excited she is finally here!

A prayer request from Teresa Stegall...

Hey all, I just got a call 5 min ago from my dad – very bad news. All I know is that one of my young cousins Matt ( ~22 years old ) was in an accident and was flown to Peoria Hospital and my dad said that right now the situation is very critical.

I don’t know that he (on his parents and sister) are believers. Please pray for a miracle to happen so that glory can be given to God! I know that He is able is it is His will. Thanks!

Prayer request from Candace Fish...

I would really appreciate it if you could pray for Jonathan. He has been in the hospital since Monday with fevers of 105 - 106 which are causing seizures.

The doctors told us last night that they finally found the infection and it is actually in his blood. He has had everything from x-rays, EEG's, to a spinal tap.

He isn't resting because he's in isolation and for all of us to be in there with him you have to be fully gowned/masked/gloved, and this freaks him out. He didn't sleep AT ALL yesterday and is putting up quite the fight with the poor nurses and docs!

We have no idea when he will be released, so please pray for us as Luke has had to take time off school and work to help me with kids since one person always has to be at the hospital. Please also pray that since I was with him at the beginning that my body & the baby inside would be protected from this contagious illness! Thank you all for being there to pray with us!

In Him, Candace

A Few Announcements...

Ok, so I hate staff devotions.

Every week at Moody everyone in our department files in, sits down and listens to a fellow employee share a thought from scripture, encouragement or testimony. The idea is great and I have the privilege of hearing from others in our department who are very talented "speakers." But, when the rotation finally rolls around to me I dread it.

"I'm not the Bible scholar!" I say to myself. Not to mention, I have less formal training, knowledge, and typically the youngest person in the room. So, every time I ponder for weeks in advance hoping that people don't walk out from the hour saying, "And she works at Moody because....”

Well, on one particular occasion I felt led to share from a previous Kay Arthur devotional I did with a friend a few years ago. While it was certain that I felt God's leading, to be quite honest it was kind of a depressing topic. I thought, "Great, people will not only question my ability, but sanity.” However, trying to work on my submission (never-ending journey) I sat down and shared.

This particular staff devotion was months ago, but today I was reminded of how important submission to God's guidance is to the big picture of faith.

I had stopped by Danica's office to pick up a Land's End catalog for a few shirts we are ordering and we started chatting about Student Wives and the books we were reading. The conversation evolved into thoughts on Bible Studies and recommendations. Then, Danica began thanking me for sharing about this Kay Arthur study so many months ago. It turns out she gave it to her mom as a birthday present and now the two of them are doing it together. It has also been a real encouragement to Danica's mother in her spiritual growth.

Wow. The results have nothing to do with me or my ability, but with my submission. One small act, regardless of how well I presented my "speech" that day in staff devotions, presented a small fact, the title of a book, which inspired and encouraged someone else's walk with Christ!

So, what's the point? Why is Lindsey sharing this? Because there is an opportunity for you to take part in the "big picture.”

The rest of our meetings are scheduled to have testimonies from other wives scattered throughout the semester. However, we need volunteers. Remember, it's not about your ability, your speech, or your "talent." It's all about submission and God allowing us the privilege to join in the "big picture."

Please email Danica at danica.allen@moody.edu if you are interested. Thanks for letting me share.

--Lindsey

Talented stylists...

Hi ladies!
I am looking for someone to do cornrows on my hair! Any of the hairdressers here, or anyone else that can french-braid, able and willing??

I can't pay much but will definitely pay! I just want the front half of my head braided then the hair tied off, doesn't need to be fancy! I can get it done at a salon, just didn't know if someone here wanted a little extra money!!

Oh, I am looking for someone who could do it anytime on Friday, or Saturday before 1pm. (I have a surprise date planned for my hubby and it's his favorite hairstyle on me!) You can email me at hisblessedfish@yahoo.com if you are interested! Thanks!
Candace Fish

Note: Candance sent this to me a few days ago and I didn't post right away! I apologize to Candace and if anyone was interested in helping her get ready for her special date that would be wonderful! Thank you for your patience!

Doesn't this guy look so in love with his Valentine?

A special "thank you" to the Vanlaningham's for sharing their marriage wisdom with us at the banquet.

Our "Newlywed" contestants also deserve a round of applause...
